The whole recipe, one glance
A recipe is a sequence of merges: things get combined with other things until only the dish is left. Prose hides that structure — you read to step six before discovering the butter from step one should have been softened, or that two bowls could have been one.
A recipe table shows the structure directly. Ingredients are rows. Steps are columns. Each step spans exactly the rows it uses, so reading left to right shows what joins what, and when — and reading any column top to bottom shows everything that should be in your bowl at that moment.

How the conversion works
Paste recipe text, drop a link, or photograph a cookbook page. An AI model reads it and rebuilds it as a table; then the result is checked — every ingredient must be used, steps must nest properly, nothing may be invented (a bake step needs a real oven temperature in the source, or it doesn't pass). A conversion that fails those checks is retried with a stronger model, and if it still can't be trusted you get an error, not a wrong table.
Tables keep the recipe's own language, offer cups and grams when the source has both, scale from ½× to 3×, and export as an image, spreadsheet, or print-ready page. Link conversions join the library, credited and linked to their source. Pasted text and photos stay private.
Where the format comes from
Michael Chu invented this notation at Cooking for Engineers in the early 2000s, drawing every table by hand. RecipeTables exists so any recipe can look like that without the hand-drawing.
